Knowledge of Fastener Thread and Head Types

Updated on 2024-12-12

Screws are typically classified by their threads and head styles. Threads are generally categorized into coarse threads, fine threads, self-tapping threads, triangular threads, and trapezoidal threads. Among these, coarse threads, fine threads, and self-tapping threads are the most common.

By thread:

  • Coarse threads have a larger pitch and higher strength, suitable for connecting materials like wood and plastic. They are commonly used in furniture leg connections to ensure stability.

  • Fine threads have a smaller pitch and are suitable for fastening metal materials, often found in machinery, automotive, and electronic products.

  • Self-tapping threads can form their own threads in materials, commonly used in metal sheets and plastic, ideal for quick installations.

  • Triangular threads are often used in pipe connections for a good seal, ensuring tightness and leak prevention in water, gas, and oil pipes.

  • Trapezoidal threads are used to transmit power, commonly seen in machinery, suitable for high-torque connections and power transmission applications.

Common screw heads can be categorized by their shapes into pan heads, round heads, truss heads, hex heads, flat heads and pan washer heads. According to the slot type, they can further be divided into Phillips head, Cross with slot head, Pozi head, Torx head, Slotted head, Triangle head, Hex socket head and Square head.

By head shape:

  • Round head: The head is round and is commonly used in applications where appearance is important.

  • Flat head: The head is flat and can be embedded into the surface of the material, commonly used in woodworking or metalworking.

  • Countersunk head: The head has a chamfer and can be completely embedded into the surface of the material, suitable for smooth surfaces.

  • Hex head: The head is hexagonal, suitable for situations where a wrench is needed.

  • Pan head: The head is hemispherical, suitable for applications requiring a larger bearing surface.

By slot type:

  • Phillips head: This is one of the most common screw slot types, using a cross-shaped slot to drive the screw into the material. It is commonly found in many household and industrial screws. The advantage is that it provides better alignment and torque transmission, but it is prone to slippage under high torque.

  • Cross with slot head: This is a combination of slotted and Phillips heads. This design merges the advantages of both slot types, providing better torque transmission and stability.

  • Pozi head: Combines the advantages of both slotted and Phillips heads, offering stronger torque transmission and reduced slippage, making it suitable for applications requiring high strength and stability.

  • Torx head: Known for its low cam-out risk and low pressure requirements, making it ideal for high-torque applications. It offers extremely strong torque transmission and reduces slippage, suitable for automotive and mechanical industries.

  • Slotted head: Features a simple longitudinal groove. They are commonly used in furniture assembly, door handles, pulls, and other larger home projects.

  • Triangle head: Comprised of three slotted heads arranged around a triangular hole, with the slots offset. This head type is very common in the aerospace manufacturing field and frequently seen in the fasteners of some electronic devices.

  • Hex socket head: Featuring a hexagonal shape, it is commonly found in machined parts and industrial equipment. Its advantages include strong torque transmission and reduced slippage, making it suitable for applications with limited space.

  • Square head: Located at the center of the screw head, forming a square shape around it. They are less commonly used and are typically employed in certain specialized experiments.
